| Isabelle Turcan (Université de Lyon) | | The digitalization of its collections of ancient books: ancient typography [Talk hold in French, with simultaneous translation into English] (Abstract) | | Numérisation de collections de livres anciens : typographie ancienne (Résumé) | Abstract ATILF (UMR CNRS 7118 Nancy 2) in collaboration with LORIA (UMR CNRS 7503 Nancy 1) has launched a program of research about the digitalization of its collections of ancient books. The focus of this program has been stressed on the collection of ancient dictionaries, first in view of the safe keeping of many frail and unique volumes laid on the shelves of the ATILF library, second in view of facilitating for a larger community the access to their semiotic and linguistic content. This particular program is part of a larger program impulsed by the CNRS, of which the general objectives are to improve the automatic recognition of writing, the electronic analysis of any kind of documents, and the documents retroconversion. Due as well to the specific difficulties of their semiotic structure as to the technical problems linked with the nature of the material support of those texts, the digitalization of ancient dictionaries has often been affected by some crucial limitations. Our paper aims to explicit a detailed and objective analysis of : 1) the scientific criteria of selection for the choice of the copies which are to be digitalized. Scientific means in this case philology and social history of the book. 2) the technical modalities leading as well to the making of digital images corpora as to the making of electronic textual databases. This implies to have a clear conception of the goals of the digitalization enterprise. What to choose in this respect? A simple reproduction of the image of the text with typography ? An improved reproduction of this image by minimal indexation of the entries of the dictionaries (when they are clearly distinct)? Or a complete indexation of the constitutive elements of the image which raises the problem of the tagging of those elements in a perspective of transparency with the semiotic structure of the text. 3) the reasons determining the choice of a methodology for exploring the foreseen databases. 4) the practical principles to emphasize when considering the different expectations of the users of those digitalized documents in respect with the technical constraint derived from the material and scientific nature of the ancient dictionaries. ATILF has developped an expertised skill in the digitalization of old printings and ancient books. As the coordinator of the digitalizing project of this laboratory, we will deliver in this paper a preliminary analysis of samples of the collection of ancient dictionaries to be kept in ATILF library : How to identifiy the problems bound to the old species of typography? How to detect the best OCR? How to conceive histograms explaining the conditions of improving the optical recognization of characters? Which results for what purpose?
