| Ioannis Kanellos (ENST Bretagne, Brest) | | Intertextuality and digital typography (Abstract) | | Intertextualité et typographie numérique | Abstract The electronic document seems to offer important new opportunities compared to the traditional typographic practices. Perhaps it already prefigures what will be the future notion of a book. Generally, one puts the accent on the possibility of multi-modal integrations, non-linear reading strategies, transmissibility, and configurability. In the first part, the paper discusses critically such conceptions under a refutation objective: indeed, all of them are already classical, although differently realized under traditional typographic conceptions. This discussion aims at putting some light, in the second part of the paper, on a more profound element of the electronic document: its possibility to deal with intertextuality. Indeed, the traditional form of typography is thoroughly "mono-document". Its main hypothesis is founded on a conception of "one document (or book)/one typographic style/one reader". The place of the reader as the main interpretative component is rather under-evaluated. But, from an interpretative point of view, the reality is other: no reader may read, alone, isolated, a document. Each document (in particular a book) possesses a place in a society of documents (books), from which it inherits interpretative coherence and intelligibility. This "documentary sociability" announces a significant turn in the conception of the document, as far as it redefines its uses and forms of appropriation. The third part of the paper discusses, precisely, the notion of intertextuality, as, perhaps, the more profound element of the new conception of the document (book). The aim is to show the importance in integrating interpretative requirements in the notion of electronic document. Which, certainly, will constrain the very modelling of the new typographic structures concerning the notion of document (in particular, of book). |
